Date of Birth: October 16, 1986

Mr. Fotios Barkas is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ioannina, specializing in research on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases with a particular emphasis on lipid disorders, obesity and diabetes mellitus.

Education and academic background

  • 2010: He obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Ioannina.

  • 2020: He completed his PhD in Pathology entitled “Association of classic and newer risk factors with the occurrence of cardiovascular disease in patients with dyslipidemia” at the University of Ioannina, offering new knowledge on innovative risk factors for the occurrence of cardiovascular disease and their management.

  • 2020: Received a Master's Degree in Applied Dietetics and Nutrition from Harokopio University, strengthening his expertise in the connection of nutrition with clinical medicine.

Professional Experience

  • 2015-2020: Served as a Resident Physician in Internal Medicine at the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine of the University General Hospital of Ioannina.

  • 2020-2022: Appointed as Consultant in Internal Medicine at the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Unit of the University General Hospital of Ioannina.

 

Postgraduate Education and Awards

  • 2022-2023: He followed postgraduate education as a Visiting Research Fellow and Honorary Associate Research Fellow at the Department of Primary Care and Public Health at Imperial College London in the United Kingdom. Today he continues his collaboration with Imperial College as a Research Fellow.

  • 2022-2023: He participated in the EAS Young Fellows Programme for Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Diseases, a prominent European initiative of the European Atherosclerosis Society, which aims to develop emerging leaders in cardiovascular science.

  • 2023: He received the National SCOPE Fellowship award, a global recognition for obesity management and research, confirming his commitment to tackling obesity in Greece.

Research Interests

  • Mr. Barkas' research interest is focused on cardiovascular prevention, with particular emphasis on the treatment of cholesterol and lipid metabolism disorders, obesity, diabetes mellitus and hypertension.

  • Since 2011, he has been actively participating in the clinical and research activities of the Outpatient Lipid & Obesity Clinic, contributing to the clinical management and research of these chronic diseases.

  • Between 2012-2020, he completed his doctoral thesis at the Medical School of the University of Ioannina, investigating the relationship between traditional and novel risk factors and the incidence of cardiovascular disease in patients with dyslipidemia, highlighting important and innovative data for the prevention of the disease.

  • At the same time, he completed his postgraduate thesis entitled “Nutrition and cardiovascular risk in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia: systematic review and meta-analysis”, within the framework of the Postgraduate Program “Applied Dietetics – Nutrition” at Harokopio University (2017-2020), strengthening his knowledge in nutrition and cardiovascular health.

  • During 2022-2023, he served as a Visiting Researcher & Honorary Associate Researcher at the Department of Primary Care & Public Health of Imperial College London (Imperial Centre for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Imperial College London, UK) under the provisiomn of Professor Kausik Ray. His research focused on cardiovascular prevention, lipids and diabetes mellitus. Today, he continues as a Research Associate in the same department and in the Clinical Trials Unit (Imperial Clinical Trials Unit).

  • From 2013 to present, Mr. Barkas has contributed to more than 20 international research programs in the fields of lipids, obesity and diabetes, advancing research and knowledge for the prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases.

Publications - Honors

  • He has written more than 50 publications in international scientific journals and over 100 abstracts in Greek and international scientific journals. At the same time, he has presented more than 50 abstracts at international conferences and over 100 abstracts at Greek conferences, actively contributing to the promotion of scientific knowledge and research.

  • His research work has been awarded 13 times at Greek conferences, recognizing his significant contribution to science.

  • He has received a scholarship for the preparation of his doctoral thesis and one for further training abroad from the Hellenic Atherosclerosis Society. In addition, the European Atherosclerosis Society has honored him with 6 scholarships (Young Investigator Fellowship/Travel Grant) during the period 2015-2022.
